Structure effects induced by high mechanical compaction of STAM-17-OEt MOF powders

2021

Financial support by PJ-RIC-FFABR_2017 and the EPSRC grant EPSRC industrial CASE award (grant EP/N50936X/1) are acknowledged. The research programme Nanoporous materials (P1-0021) financially supported by Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS) is acknowledged as well. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for many potential applications, spacing from gas storage to catalysis. However, the powder form of which they are generally made is not suitable, mainly because of the low packing density. Powder compaction is therefore necessary, but also challenging because of their typical mechanical fragility. Indeed, generally, they undergo irreversibly damages upon densification processe…

Mechanism of Anesthetic Action: Oxygen Pathway Perturbation Hypothesis

2001

Although more than 150 years have past since the discovery of general anesthetics, how they precisely work remains a mystery. We propose a novel unitary mechanism of general anesthesia verifiable by experiments. In the proposed mechanism, general anesthetics perturb oxygen pathways in both membranes and oxygen-utilizing proteins such that the availabilities of oxygen to its sites of utilization are reduced which in turn triggers cascading cellular responses through oxygen-sensing mechanisms resulting in general anesthesia. Despite the general assumption that cell membranes are readily permeable to oxygen, exiting publications indicate that these membranes are plausible oxygen transport barr…

In each of the title compounds, the anion shows evidence of extensive electronic delocalization. A combination of N—H⋯N and X—H⋯N hydrogen bonds links the ions in (I) into a ribbon of alternating centrosymmetric (18) and (26) rings, and those in (II) into simple (7) chains of alternating cations and anion with further cations pendent from the chain.

Azide, water and adipate as bridging ligands for Cu(II): Synthesis, structure and magnetism of (μ4-adipato-κ-O)(μ-aqua)(μ-azido-κN1,N1)copper(II) mon…

2016

The Distinguished Scientist Fellowship Program (DSFP) at King Saud University is gratefully acknowledged. The authors are grateful to the Algerian MESRS (Ministère de l’Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche Scientifique), the Université Ferhat Abbas Sétif 1, the KSU DSFP program and the Spanish MINECO (CTQ2014-52758-P and MAT2014-56143-R) and the Generalitat Valenciana (PrometeoII/2014/076) for financial support. The synthesis, characterization, single crystal structure and magnetic properties of the compound [(CuN3(OH2))2(adp)]n (1) are presented, in which adp stands for the adipate(2-) anion. This compound consists of layers containing chains of six-coordinated Cu(II) ions; the chains…

Metal-organic framework-activated carbon composite materials for the removal of ammonia from contaminated airstreams

2019

L.N.M and R.E.M wish to acknowledge the financial support from the EPSRC industrial CASE award (grant EP/N50936X/1). A.T and G.B would like to thank the financial support from the Fondo per il finanziamento delle attività base di ricerca (grant PJ-RIC-FFABR_2017). Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous materials that show promise in the removal of Toxic Industrial Chemicals (TICs) from contaminated airstreams, though their development for this application has so far been hindered by issues of water stability and the wide availability and low cost of traditionally used activated carbons. Here a series of three MOF-activated carbon composite materials with different MOF to carb…

Efficient light-emitting electrochemical cells using small molecular weight, ionic, host-guest systems

2015

This work has been supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MAT2014-55200). Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on fluorescent host-guest small molecules system are reported. The LECs show electroluminescence coming solely from the guest, with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.0%, which is very close to the theoretical maximum EQE (2.2%) for this particular system. This work demonstrates the possibility to obtain high efficiency devices employing low-cost materials, making host-guest systems a real alternative to more traditional semiconducting polymer or transition metal compounds. On equilibrium in non-hydrostatic metamorphic systems

2018

Metamorphic geology has accumulated a huge body of observation on mineral assemblages that reveal strong patterns in occurrence, summarised for example in the idea of metamorphic facies. On the realisation that such patterns needed a simple explanation, there has been considerable a posteriori success from adopting the idea that equilibrium thermodynamics can be used on mineral assemblages to make sense of the patterns in terms of, for example, the pressure and temperature of formation of mineral assemblages. In doing so, a particularly simple implicit assumption is made, that mineral assemblages operate essentially hydrostatically. Structural geologists have studied the same rocks for diff…
